Class Policies:

  1. Class attendance is mandatory.  You are allowed 3 unexcused absencesFour unexcused absences will earn you a failing gradePlease be on time and come to every class.
  2. Cell phones must be turned off or set on silent mode, AND PUT AWAY. NO TEXTING IN CLASS!
  3. There will be writing homework every week. Homework turned in late will not receive full marks.
  4. Plagiarism of any kind on any writing assignment will not be tolerated and will result in a zero.
  5. This is a speaking class, but it is very important only one person speaks at a time. Please do not speak when I am explaining something or when your classmates are speaking.
  6. Cheating during the examination will not be tolerated.  The student concerned shall be dealt with accordingly.
  7. This is an English Conversation class. Please try to ONLY speak English, especially when doing group work. If you speak to each other in Korean, you won’t be practicing your English properly.

Format:  Because our class is split into a 2 hour block and a one hour block we will be using the time differently. The one hour block will focus on practical English conversations while the two hour block will focus more specifically on hotel English. The main textbook for the course is only needed during the 2-hour class while I will provide the materials for the 1 hour class.

I will make minor changes to the course if I feel that they will give you more opportunity to enhance your English abilities. The more you bring to this course, the more you will get out of it. I would much rather you try your best and make mistakes than be shy and stay silent. No one is perfect so I expect you to be respectful and supportive of your classmates at all times. Please, if you have any questions or concerns see me after class or during my office hours. It is best to contact me via e-mail.

Final Thought: This is a conversation class and as such requires that students speak. If you do not want to speak English please do not take this class. If you want to sit at the back of the class and not participate, you will fail this class. If you want to speak Korean, use your cell phone, do the activities quickly and badly so that you can sit and stare at your partner and be bored, please do not take this course. The course is as interesting as you make it and having students who don’t want to speak makes it painful for everyone.
